Wm. LeRoy Heinrichs, MD, PhD

Dr. Wm. LeRoy Heinrichs is a Professor (Emeritus, Active), Past Chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and Associate Director (part-time) of SUMMIT (Stanford University Medical Media and Information Technologies) at Stanford University School of Medicine. A graduate of the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine (M.D. degree), of Wayne State University (Ob/Gyn Residency), and Oregon Health Sciences University (M.S, Ph.D degrees), Dr. Heinrichs has produced over 100 research citations in gynecological endocrinology and surgical education, and holds four patents. He is a pioneer in videoendoscopic surgery, and in surgical simulation as a learning technology. The first set of digital 3-D models of the human pelvis, Lucy 2.0, were created by Dr. Heinrichs. The initial development of the first commercial operative hysteroscopy trainer with Immersion Medical was accomplished with SBIR funding secured jointly by him with the Stanford-NASA National Biocomputation Laboratory. Early in 2007, Dr. Heinrichs reported benchmark user data for five commercial surgical simulators, a project funded by DARPA and TATRC. He regularly directs surgical simulation workshops at the annual meetings of SLS and AAGL, professional surgical societies.

Dr. Heinrichs is Co-investigator on a NIH (NLM) grant focused on the performance of advanced networks used for visualization and clinical skills training. Beginning in 2003, he led the SUMMIT team as an early adopter of online Virtual Worlds by developing SimTech for training emergency medical professionals. He is currently co-developing with Forterra, their second-generation Virtual World for training healthcare professionals for the clinical management of potential Mass Casualty victims. He was an invited lecturer at the 2006 Serious Games Summit, where he described the path for developing Virtual Worlds training scenarios for High School students in performing CPR (cardio-pulmonary resuscitation). He is a Certified Participant in the 2006 Disaster Management Seminars taught by the California Preparedness Educational Networks, He also serves as lecturer for ACI's workshops on the 'Operating Room for the Future', is a consultant to Immersion Medical, Inc,and Panaseca, Inc., and serves on Aligned Management Inc's. Advisory Committee for MMVR (Medicine Meet Virtual Reality).
